Steven Berghuis cannot be lucky with his first goal for the Dutch national team. The attacker finally came from zero in his 23rd international match in the World Cup qualifying match against Latvia (2-0) on Saturday.
Berghuis made his first goal for the Orange in style. He shot the ball from about twenty meters in a characteristic way into the far corner and thus ensured the liberating 1-0 after more than half an hour of play. While cheering he slapped himself on the chest a few times.
“You shouldn’t get frustrated about it, but of course I was looking for that first goal. That was something I worked very hard for, a goal that I set for myself. This is a relief. It has been delayed for too long. Zero goals in 22 matches is simply not good enough, “said Berghuis.
“The longer the first one is not forthcoming, the more it will become an item in the media. As an attacker of Orange, you have to deliver. I also want to be important to the team. That is why it is extra nice that I opened the game with my goal. I I am very happy and proud. But I am not satisfied yet. On to the second one. ”
‘Public presence felt fantastic’
A nice extra for Berghuis was that he could celebrate his first goal with 5,000 spectators. They were allowed to attend the competition as part of the Fieldlab experiments. It was the first game in the Netherlands with an audience since November 2019.
“It felt fantastic for us, even if there were only 5,000. I think the fans loved it too, because they were very enthusiastic. Hopefully the world will look a lot better in the coming months. That would be nice for everyone. to be.”
Berghuis’ goal was one of no fewer than 35 goal attempts by the Netherlands against Latvia. Orange failed to win with a bigger result and with that to do good business with regard to the goal difference, which may be important at the end of this qualifying series.
“It was incredible that it was only 1-0 at half time. We played well and created a lot of chances. It should have been 3 or 4-0 halfway through. That that didn’t happen was partly bad luck. With many opportunities the ball just didn’t fall. good or someone from Latvia was there at the last minute. ”
