Benjamin Netanyahu claimed a “huge victory of the right”, Tuesday March 23, after his Likud party finished first in the legislative elections in Israel, according to preliminary projections. “It is evident that an overwhelming majority of Israeli citizens are right-wing and want a strong and stable right-wing government.”, tweeted the outgoing Prime Minister.

According to exit polls, Likud wins between 31 and 33 seats out of 120 in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. The party of Benyamin Netanyahu is therefore, according to these projections, far ahead of the Yesh Atid party (“There is a future”) of the centrist. Yaïr Lapid. The latter is credited with 16 to 18 seats. Then followed nearly ten parties under the bar of ten seats at the end of these legislative elections, the fourth in nearly two years. The three previous polls had placed Benyamin Netanyahu and his former great rival, Benny Gantz, neck and neck.

A majority of 61 deputies is required to form a government. The Likud leader is counting for this on alliances with religious groups and, new, with the extreme right. For his part, Yaïr Lapid is counting on an agreement with parties of the left, of the center but also of the right, disappointed by the Prime Minister. However, according to these projections, the “Netanyahu bloc” will have between 51 and 56 deputies, against between 48 and 52 for that led by its rival, thanks to the good performance of its left allies. In this ballot that looks like a referendum on the outgoing Prime Minister, the leader of the radical right party (which oscillates between 6 and 8 seats according to projections) has still not officially chosen his camp.
