Before dawn, security forces cracked down on protesters in Rangoon, the economic capital of the country. “One of them was shot in the head and died in hospital”, a local protester told AFP, adding that security forces were still patrolling the area and firing indiscriminately.
Police and soldiers also opened fire on a gathering of students in Lashio, Shan State. “People had not started to demonstrate, no slogan had been uttered. The army and police arrived and fired at them with live ammunition without issuing any warning.”, Mai Kaung Saing, a local journalist told AFP.
A rescuer confirmed that at least three protesters were dead, corroborating local media reports, but his team were unable to remove the bodies.
The country has been going through a serious crisis since the head of the civilian government Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted from power in a military coup on February 1. 320 people have died in the unrest since the coup, and more than 3,000 have been arrested, according to a political prisoner advocacy group.
