Armenia has withdrawn from the next edition of Eurovision, following the political crisis the country has been going through since its military defeat against Azerbaijan last autumn, Armenian state television reported on Friday (March 5th). “Recent events, the short time and other objective reasons make the participation of Armenia impossible“, announced the public channel Armenia 1 on its Twitter account.

The popular European competition is due to take place in May in the Netherlands, which won the last edition.

Armenia has been going through a period of turmoil since its rout in the war with Azerbaijan for control of the separatist enclave of Nagorno Karabakh in the fall of 2020. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian was forced to agree to a ceasefire. the fire signed under the aegis of Moscow, which consecrates the loss by Armenia of large parts of Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijani areas that it had controlled for nearly 20 years and which formed a security glacis around the separatist region.

Since then, he has been contested by the opposition, which accuses him of treason. Demonstrations have increased since last week after the general staff’s call for the resignation of Nicole Pachinian. The conflict around Nagorno Karabakh had already interfered with Eurovision in 2016 when the Armenian candidate Iveta Moukoutchian had waved the flag of the separatist republic, drawing the wrath of the organizers. In 2012, Armenia boycotted the competition organized that year by Azerbaijan.
