an illegal export of 53 tonnes of waste to Thailand seized by customs

Two months after seizing 26 tonnes of waste bound for Guinea, Lesquin Customs seized an illegal export of 53 tonnes of waste to Thailand.

The seizure dates back to early March. The customs officers of Lesquin, in the southern suburbs of Lille, proceed to the opening of containers and come across a “mixture made up of pieces of plastic, bare wires and pieces of cable”. An operation was launched, and 53 tonnes of waste, belonging to a Somme company, were thus seized.

After investigation and expertise, the conclusions explain that the shipment is “indeed a mixture of waste”, and that its export to Thailand is illegal. This important seizure, which comes two months after the customs of Lesquin had intercepted 26 tons bound for Guinea, was underlined by Olivier Dussopt.

Olivier Dussopt underlined a seizure which “prevented a company from (…) polluting elsewhere”

The Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Recovery, in charge of Public Accounts, underlined a seizure which “prevented a company from evading its environmental obligations by going to pollute elsewhere”.
