It will be exactly twenty years ago on Thursday that the first gay marriage in the world was concluded in the Amsterdam Stopera. To reflect on this, the municipality has set up a special program.
The rainbow flag will hang throughout the city and a wedding cake will sail through the canals. Amsterdammers who want to celebrate the moment can order an A3 rainbow flag poster specially made for the occasion.
An online symposium will also be held on Thursday evening to discuss the emancipation of the rainbow community in the Netherlands. Speakers include Naomie Pieter, Job Cohen, Dinah Bons, Boris Dittrich, Glenn Helberg, Kees Waalwijk, Lygia Wachter, Irene Hemelaar, Angelo Tromp and Nicoline Grijmans-Veenendaal. Then there is a live stream full of dance, music and panel discussions.
Amsterdammers can also take a rainbow walk that takes you past twenty places that were important in the fight for acceptance and equal rights for the LGBT community. The photo exhibition Legal Love also travels through the city, in which twenty married rainbow couples talk about the meaning of their marriage.
