Almere City lost valuable points in the Kitchen Champion Division on Friday evening in the battle for promotion to the Eredivisie. The Flevolanders were down 2-0 at mid-engine MVV Maastricht.
Sven Blummel opened the score in De Geusselt more than fifteen minutes before the end with a hard shot into the short corner. Nine minutes later, Joy-Lance Mickels doubled the margin with a marker over Almere City goalkeeper Michael Woud.
Due to the defeat, Almere City remains the number three in the rankings. The gap on number two De Graafschap and leader SC Cambuur, who will both play later this weekend, is two and eight points respectively.
De Graafschap will visit NAC Breda on Sunday and Cambuur will then play against Roda JC. The top two teams in the Kitchen Champion Division are promoted directly to the Eredivisie.
Almere City already captured a period title earlier this season and is therefore certain of participation in the play-offs for promotion / relegation.
Later that day there is another match scheduled with FC Eindhoven-TOP Oss (9 p.m.).
