“The Algerian consul in Créteil, in the presence of the Air Algeria representative in Paris, has met on several occasions since March 2, 2021 certain members of this group to discuss their situation and the need to return to their places of residence pending the reopening of borders “, said the Algerian embassy in Paris in a statement which AFP learned of on Friday.
Multiple support solutions, in the hope that these passengers “come to their senses”, were offered to them to return to Great Britain, their place of departure, but “the concerned have chosen to remain in the international zone”, added the embassy.
Algeria officially suspended its air and sea links with France on March 17, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a measure extended to the rest of the world a few days later.
The emergence of the English variant of the virus has further complicated the situation: even the repatriation flights of its nationals have been suspended for the entire duration of this March.
This border closure blocked a group of 25 Algerian citizens, single men and three families including two young children, in the international zone of Roissy airport, in very rudimentary conditions: nap on the carpet to the sound of loudspeakers. -speakers, minimalist toiletries in the toilets and random meals.
The Algerian embassy also indicated that these people had been “entered individually” by Air Algeria, before their departure, of the impossibility which was made for them to return to their country. “These are lies”, one of them assured AFP on Friday, Hocine, a 49-year-old Anglo-Algerian surgeon “stuck” with his wife and 3-year-old daughter. “The people who are here were only notified the same day, once they got to the airport” de Roissy, he assured.
“We cannot treat people like this, it is a lack of respect for their life, their dignity”, reacted to AFP, lawyer Karima Hadj Said, one of the counsels seized of their files to study the possibility of an urgent legal recourse.
