The Japanese Ministry of Health is trying to contain a scandal that sparked widespread controversy, after it was found that officials from the ministry had violated the regulations for combating the Corona virus, by participating in a dinner in Tokyo, which continued beyond the permissible times.
The scandal centers on the participation of 23 government employees in a ceremony held in a restaurant, which lasted until midnight, and despite the lifting of many restrictions of the Corona virus in the Japanese capital, restaurants and bars still must be closed by nine in the evening, as part of the efforts made to keep the number of cases under control.
Today, Tuesday, Health Minister Norihisa Tamura apologized for the fact that members of his cabinet had “betrayed the people’s trust.”
The ministry leads the government’s efforts to combat the epidemic in Japan, and is responsible for the country’s vaccination program, which is progressing slowly compared to the programs of some other countries.
The minister said that the fact that 23 employees from the ministry gathered in a restaurant at a party last week, some of them without masks, “is an unnaturally high number and represents a big problem.”
A review process is now underway to see if other employees of the ministry also participated in the ceremony.
