– Toni was watching when I competed in the Finnish Championships in roller skiing at the beginning of August, but before that we are talking about March a year ago.
Roponen was before the end of the season celebrated the Finnish Championship gold in the previous season 2017–18. During this season, in addition to Sunday’s long-distance gold, he acknowledged a patch of the same color at the Pyhäjärvi Finnish Championships at 10 km (v).
The previous gold on Sunday’s trip and technology came in 2009. At that time, Roponen was sixth in the 30 km (v) joint start at the World Championships.
The athlete smiled along the route with the enthusiasm of the husband who was on duty at several points during the race:
– There was so much data that I didn’t even have time to filter it all. I just had to turn my head and wonder what that Toni said? Riitta-Liisa Roponen laughed.
The ending season has been difficult for the whole family when in Haukiputaa a wife and daughter have missed a man from America home. In Colorado, the feeling was similar. The family lived apart because of the corona pandemic.
Roponen resigned as a ski coach at a local university and will start as the rector of Tanhuvaara Sports College in Savonlinna.
Coaching the wife for the sixth and final Olympics is also better than near-telecommuting.
– A frame plan as a basis for training for the Olympic season has already been made with Toni.
Roponen is elected in the spring to the A national team, and he will take the place. There are three reasons: the national team’s ski equipment services, the positive impact of joint camp exercises, and the resources for high-pitch training.
In May, the 43-year-old athlete achieved the bronze medal in the message at the World Championships in Oberstdorf and was the best Finn, 10th, at 10 kilometers (v).
Vain Marja-Liisa and Harri Kirvesniemi, Mika Myllylä and Sami Jauhojärvi have won more Finnish skiing championships than Roponen.
