They’ve been going through hell for three days. About 180 people have been trapped since Wednesday in a hotel in Palma, in the north-east of Mozambique, by a jihadist attack on this city, workers and security sources said Friday (March 26th). The attack, launched on Wednesday afternoon, forced terrified residents to seek shelter in the surrounding forest and workers to take refuge in the hotel Amarula.

The government confirmed the event, and announced that the security forces had launched an offensive to drive out the rebels. The army is also trying to evacuate the workers by air to a safe area from this territory which houses a megaproject gas company in which the French group Total participates, according to the workers concerned. The attack is from elsewhere occurred on the day of the announcement by Total the resumption of construction work on the gas site which should be operational in 2024.

“Almost the whole city was destroyed. A lot of people died.”, a worker said by phone Friday after being evacuated. He did not give details of the victims and their nationality.

Palma is located more than 1,800 km northeast of Maputo in the gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado, where authorities have faced a violent insurgency since 2017. Armed jihadists, known as Al Shabab ( “young people” in Arabic) and who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in 2019, have been carrying out bloody attacks there for more than three years.
