Against the coronavirus, monoclonal antibodies arrive in France

This could represent new hope in the treatment of the coronavirus. Monoclonal antibodies, this class of drugs from which Donald Trump benefited last November, are arriving in France. They have just received an authorization for emergency use, and will soon be available for certain patients in hospitals.

The treatment of “Regeneron” from which the former US president had benefited should be authorized in the coming days. But for the moment, it is a treatment of the same family, that of the Eli Lilly laboratory, which has just obtained a temporary authorization for use.

Monoclonal antibodies have revolutionized the treatment of cancer and certain rare diseases for 20 years, explains Brigitte Autran, professor of immunology. And clinical trials show that they can also reduce severe forms of Covid, if offered very early, within five days of onset of symptoms.

“Select the strongest antibodies”

“It’s a bit like taking convalescent plasma, but it’s a more sophisticated step, which above all makes it possible to select the most powerful antibodies”, indicates Brigitte Autran at Europe 1. “This is the first generation. treatment really aimed at the virus that is being developed. ”

But given their cost, between 1,000 and 2,000 euros per dose, these monoclonal antibodies cannot be offered to everyone. They will only be available in hospitals for fragile patients, especially those over 80 years of age or people on chemotherapy, dialysis or transplant recipients.
