AS Saint-Etienne faces the complicated challenge of the transfer window

Sixteenth in the last Ligue 1 ranking, AS Saint-Etienne is clearly one of the teams that benefited from the premature end of the championship. The Greens were only three points ahead of the red zone and remained on an impressive series of seven games without a league win, the last Forezien success in L1 dating from January 25 against Nîmes (2-1). On paper, ASSE therefore experienced a very complicated 2019/2020 season when many saw Claude Puel’s band in the top 5 at the start of the fiscal year. What to expect for 2020/2021? Before knowing more, it will especially take a look at the Stephane mercato.

The continuation after this publicity

Unsurprisingly, despite the increase in TV rights to come, we should not expect tinsel. However, on the departures side, there will be movement. Franck Honorat (23) and Vagner Dias (24) have already left the ship to join Brest and Metz respectively. They brought in around € 8 million between them. Jean-Eudes Ahoulou (26) returned to Monaco after his loan, while Sainte is still negotiating with Arsenal so that his nugget William Saliba (19) plays his last match with the Greens, the final of the French Cup against PSG, before leaving for London. Used only four times this season in L1, Assane Diousse (22) should not last long, Progress stating that his coach would not really count on him. Appeared fifteen times in the green jersey, Yohan Cabaye (34 years old) for his part should spin in MLS, without extending his lease until the appointment of Coupe de France.

Bouanga and Ruffier cases to manage and no flashy arrival on the menu

Finally, two major files are to be followed. Elected player of the season at Saint-Etienne, Denis Bouanga (25) comes out of a very productive year (10 goals in 26 L1 matches). Not surprisingly, it is perhaps the most courted item. Under contract until 2023, the former Nîmes caught the eye of Betis, but especially of Stade Rennais. The Bretons have also made an initial offer below the € 15 million claimed by the Foreziens. Aged 33 and linked to the club until 2021, Stephane Ruffier will also have to express his wishes. Iconic goalkeeper of the Greens since 2011, the native of Bayonne has officially been relegated to the role of lining of Jessy Moulin by Puel. A complex situation for those who have three selections among the Blues. Will Ruffier ask to leave? Such a scenario cannot be excluded. Which explains why RMC Sport announces that Puel has decided to retain young Stefan Bajic (18), when he was coveted by Cholet.

In the arrivals department, the most media report of the moment is of course that of the future ex-Parisian Adil Aouchiche (17 years old). The attacking midfielder will not sign his first professional contract with PSG. Nothing has been done yet, but ASSE is today, according to our information, in the “final” in this matter with Stade Rennais. Also in the midfield, the name of former Rennes driver Nicolas Janvier (21) was also mentioned. Having left for Portugal last summer, the native of Saint-Malo is playing with the reserve team of Vitoria Guimarães (8 goals in 23 league matches). He is bound until 2024. Often announced at the start because of a very imposing monthly salary for the finances of Saint-Etienne (210,000 € / month), Wahbi Kahzri (29 years old) could finally stay another season. As a reminder, the Tunisian still has two years of contract.

Forced to touch up without much money, Claude Puel could, according to Progress, garnish his environment with the promotion of the two young Lucas Gourna-Douath (17 years old) and Aïmen Moueffek (19 years old). The latter were used last Saturday against the formation of Rumilly-Vallieres (National 2) and they would have made a good impression. Finally, in defense, the defender of the Tigers (Mexico), Timothee Kolodziejczak (28 years old), should be definitively bought (he was loaned these last two seasons). On the left side, the Greek of PAOK Dimitrios Giannoulis (24 years old) could be an alternative in case of departure of the Peruvian Miguel Trauco (27 years old). You will understand, ASSE will not make very large investments this summer. And if there are mass departures, the Greens will bet on cheap recruits and the promotion of local young people.
