The assassination of science writer and blogger Abhijit Roy is aimed at disrupting and discouraging freedom of expression by disrupting public safety. The court sentenced five members of the banned militant group Ansar al-Islam to death and sentenced another to life in prison for killing Abhijit.

The court ruled that Abhijit Roy was a science writer and blogger. He took part in the chat of science-minded writers at the Bangla Academy Book Fair and confessed to the attack on his way back. Accused of atheism, members of the banned Ansar al-Islam, the main attackers, including the accused in the case, brutally killed Abhijit Roy. Abhijit Roy has to pay with his life for free writing and expression. The purpose of assassinating Abhijit Roy is to disrupt and discourage freedom of expression by disrupting public security so that no one can write and express themselves freely in the future.

Lawyer Golam Charwar Khan Zakir was the state counsel in this case. The accused were lawyers Mosleh Uddin Jasim, Khairul Islam Liton and Nazrul Islam.

Science writer and blogger Abhijit Roy used to take his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya to the United States. They came to the country after the book fair in 2015. On February 26, on their way back from the Amar Ekushey Book Fair premises, they were attacked by terrorists in the TSC area of ​​Dhaka University. Abhijit was killed by a terrorist’s knife. At that moment, his wife Bonya was seriously injured and a finger was cut off. He returned to the United States after the incident. After the barbaric incident, Abhijit’s father Professor Ajay Roy (deceased) filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station. After investigating the case, on February 18, 2019, Monirul Islam, an inspector of the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTTC) of the investigating officer, filed a chargesheet against the six in the court. After that, the court started the trial on August 8, 2019 by making charges against the six accused. After two arguments, the court fixed February 16 for the verdict in the case. According to him, the court pronounced the verdict of the murder.
