Policy of sanctions against Venezuela persists

The imposition of new coercive measures against Venezuela, this time by the European Union, confirms today the persistence of external powers in interfering in the affairs of the South American nation through punitive actions.

Less than two weeks after the release of the report by the UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan, on the impact of sanctions on the economy and the enjoyment of human rights of Venezuelans, the regional bloc ignored the indications of the expert.

In this sense, the European Union included in its unilateral list of sanctioned 19 officials of Venezuela, including high dignitaries, magistrates and representatives of the public powers, in retaliation for the holding of the elections on December 6 last.

The community entity considered that the legislative elections did not comply with the ‘democratic standards’ and lacked guarantees, despite having the approval of hundreds of international observers, who validated their transparency and legitimacy.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, the Bolivarian Government described the new interventionist maneuver as a reaction to the “manifest ineffectiveness” of the actions to force a regime change in the South American country.

“These erratic decisions also reveal the inability of the European bloc to attend, respect and accept the will of the Venezuelan people, and once again reveals its anachronistic interventionist and interference policy towards Venezuela,” the complaint underlines.

Likewise, Caracas pointed out this illegal action as an affront to the United Nations, which, through its special rapporteur on coercive measures, demanded the lifting of the so-called sanctions.

Speaking before the 46th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, repudiated the excessive pressure actions through the imposition of more than 450 unilateral and illegal coercive measures against the country.

‘(…) Venezuela has been deprived of at least 30 billion dollars in cash, which are part of the Republic’s assets abroad, resources that should have been, and should be, used to attend to health, food and the comprehensive rights of our people, ‘said the president.

Maduro highlighted the broad meeting agenda developed by the UN special rapporteur, which allowed her to dialogue with various political, business and social actors about the Venezuelan reality.

In this regard, the head of state described the conclusions of the preliminary report presented by the expert as conclusive, demonstrating that the punitive actions of the United States and the European Union, ‘as a deliberate tool’ for regime change, violate international law.

At a press conference held at the end of her recent official visit to Venezuela, the UN independent expert urged the US government and its allies to lift all the coercive measures taken against Caracas.

Douhan asserted that the illegal actions implemented by the United States slowed the development of the country due to the severe impact caused to its economy, causing the fall in foreign exchange earnings by 99 percent in recent years.

It also recognized that the application of such actions affected the country’s access to medicines and food, which had a devastating effect on the health of the Venezuelan population, in addition to accentuating the crisis scenario and internal tensions, with repercussions on the migratory flow. and the separation of families.
