Eindhoven residents affected by corona crisis, worried about personal situation | NOW

Many Eindhoven residents say they have been affected by the corona crisis, according to the city’s annual residents’ survey on Friday. They are concerned about their personal situation. For example with regard to mental health, finances and work. There is also concern for the elderly and vulnerable people.

The residents’ survey has been conducted by the municipality for almost 40 years. About 23,000 people in all age groups are invited to this event and this year nearly 4,000 residents responded. Questions are about subjects such as public space, traffic, sports, health, culture, safety and politics.

In terms of public space, the new trees in the city center are highly appreciated. Like every year, there is annoyance about dog poo and litter. Nice places to spend free time are the parks, which on average receive an 8 rating.

90 percent of the respondents indicated that they felt healthy. Almost three quarters have enough people around them to fall back on in case of problems and 16 percent are informal carers themselves. Due to the corona crisis, the number of hours they provide informal care has increased by a quarter. For one in ten it was a reason to stop.

In terms of finances, 20 percent indicate that they are struggling with debt. 3 percent say they do not have enough money for a daily hot meal. About 15 percent have insufficient money for new clothes, vacations or a sports subscription. With regard to sports, two out of three say they do it every week. Fitness, walking, running and cycling are by far the most popular. Yoga stands out for women and for men mountain biking, for example.

Involvement in Eindhoven politics remains unabatedly low. Only one in a hundred attended a council meeting and only 15 percent feel represented by the council. The vast majority of Eindhoven residents believe that councilors do not know what is going on in the city and that there is insufficient listening.
