DUO makes printing error with letters: citizen service numbers on the street | NOW

The citizen service numbers of an unknown number of customers of the Education Executive Agency (DUO) are on the street, reports Faithful Tuesday. The government agency has made a printing error on supposedly hundreds of letters.

Due to a human error in the formatting of letters, the social security numbers have become visible in the address window of the envelopes. “Unfortunately, the BSNs are printed just a bit too high”, a spokesperson for DUO confirms to NU.nl.

According to the newspaper, the letters were intended for about seventeen hundred people who were involved in drawing up, organizing and conducting state exams in secondary (special) education. The error came to light after a person receiving the letter informed the implementing agency.

According to the spokesperson, the formatting error was not made in all people. “We have also received reports from people who did go well. We are still investigating how many people that are not.”

All seventeen hundred people have received a letter from DUO with the message that their BSNs may have been leaked. The authority has also apologized.

The data breach has been reported to the Dutch Data Protection Authority. DUO is investigating whether it is possible to omit numbers from letters from now on.
