Covid deaths in the US in just over a year exceed the number of Americans killed in both world wars and the Vietnam war combined.
The United States exceeded 500,000 deaths in the covid-19 pandemic.
It’s the most recent grim milestone for a country that has by far the world’s highest death toll from the coronavirus.
The United States doubles the death toll of the next most affected country, Brazil.
But it is also one of the most populated countries in the world.
In terms of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, it occupies the ninth place, behind countries like the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Italy and Portugal, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The first known death from the virus in the United States occurred on February 6, 2020.
That means half a million lives have been lost in just over a year, more than the number killed in the United States by World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War combined.
To put this in perspective…
- If every death came from the city of Atlanta, almost its entire population would disappear.
- If you counted one second for every person who died from covid in the US, you would count almost six days.
- The death toll equals the total four-day crowd at the Coachella music festival, one of the largest annual music events in America.
- And it’s almost five times the attendance at the busiest Super Bowl in history: the Rose Bowl in California in 1977 (103,985).
Death came in three waves
The first wave of spring began when most of the country went into lockdown and was followed by a second wave, albeit less severe, in the period from late summer to early fall.
A devastating third increase in the last three months took place during the Christmas holidays.
How does covid compare to cancer?
Covid is among the leading causes of death in the United States.
Last year, it was the third main cause death overall, and heart disease and cancer alone claimed more lives in America.
In some cases, especially during the third wave, it skyrocketed more than heart disease and cancer.
The death toll from covid in the US is more than 10 times greater than the number of Americans who died of flu and pneumonia in the year before the pandemic.
The Life expectancy in the US it fell by a full year in the first half of 2020, a change that experts say was driven by the pandemic.
The life expectancy of the entire population was reduced to 77.8 years, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
A closer look at the 500,000
The covid-19 did not spare any part of the country.
At the beginning of the pandemic, it was largely concentrated in a few large cities with diverse black communities, such as New York and Detroit.
But toward the end of last year, some of the least populated states in the United States, including North Dakota and Dakota from the south, experienced some of the worst outbreaks, not just in the United States, but in the world.
Racial minorities, with the exception of Asian Americans, were more likely to die from the virus than white Americans.
Blacks in particular have been the hardest hit, dying a rate 1.4 times higher than whites.
Indigenous communities in particular were the most affected per capita.
The data suggest that these racial disparities are often based on social factors community, such as a greater likelihood that people of certain races and ethnicities work in essential occupations, depend more on public transportation and live in crowded housing.
