The asylum seekers’ center (azc) in the Rotterdam district of Beverwaard will close this summer. The temporary shelter on Edo Bergsmaweg is scheduled to close after five years. Before 1 July, all residents must have been transferred to other reception centers.

Nearly six hundred asylum seekers currently live in the Beverwaard asylum seekers’ center. The residents represent 46 nationalities, most of the people are from Syria, Iran, Eritrea, Turkey and Afghanistan. From April, no new residents will be placed in the Beverwaard, the relocation will start a month later. Families with school-age children move during the May holidays. Of the 150 children who live in the asylum seekers’ center, 130 are covered by the compulsory education law.

Because there is a need for more reception places in the Randstad, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) asked the municipality to renew the lease last year. That request was not granted. After all, the arrival of an asylum seekers’ center was accompanied by a lot of commotion and Mayor Aboutaleb wanted to honor his firm agreement that the reception would be for a maximum of five years. The COA is still examining whether staff members can work at other asylum seekers’ centers.

There was a lot of protest against the reception of asylum seekers in 2016. During a public consultation meeting, emotions ran high because residents feared the coming of trouble. But with a single incident, the asylum seekers’ center led a relatively quiet life on Edo Bergsmaweg.

After closure of the asylum seekers’ center, the Zuidpunt in the Beverwaard will be given a different purpose. Various parties have already set their sights on the piece of land, including the RET, which would like to park clean buses there. Feyenoord City thinks it is an interesting place to make an extra P + R. The municipality itself would like to tackle the intersection with the Groeninx van Zoelenlaan at that location.
