Leak confirms Sony’s return to compact phones

The telephone division of Japanese Sony was for a long time more or less alone in releasing compact Android phones whose specifications largely matched the flagships. However, the phones in the Compact series were abandoned with the 2018 launch of the Xperia XZ2 Compact. Pictures and data from the diligent leak Onleaks show that Sony is returning to compact phones and thus joins an incipient trend that Apple started with the Iphone 12 Mini.

The name of the new phone is said to be Xperia 1 III Compact, where the Roman numerals are pronounced as “Mark III”. According to the report, the phone should justify the name even though it is slightly larger than its predecessor Xperia XZ2 Compact. The screen grows from 5 inches to 5.5 inches, which in today’s phone market can be considered compact. The dimensions of 140 × 68.9 × 8.9 mm are slightly larger than its predecessor and Apple’s competitor Iphone 12 mini, where the latter measures in at 131.5 × 64.2 × 7.4 mm.

Judging by the leaked image, Sony retains previous design language with a relatively thick edge under the screen, what in a telephone context is usually called a chin or “chin”. The front selfie camera is said to have a resolution of 8 megapixels and is housed in a drop-shaped space on the upper part of the screen. The back is equipped with two vertically mounted cameras where the primary camera should have a sensor of 13 megapixels.

In terms of physical buttons, the left side of the phone is equipped with a volume control, physical camera button and a capacitive fingerprint reader in the power button. According to the report, the Xperia 1 III Compact will be one of the few phones that in the year of grace 2021 will be equipped with a 3.5-millimeter audio output, which is accompanied by a charging port of the format USB Type-C. However, the information does not mention when during the year Sony intends to release the Xperia 1 III Compact.

Are you interested in a compact Android phone, or have you become too used to the screen space that modern phones offer?
