All apps will need to ask for tracking permission from the next iOS 14 beta

Apple has announced that its updated App Tracking Transparency (ATT) privacy policy will take effect starting in the next beta versions of iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and tvOS 14. The company said the public versions will be released in early spring.

The requirement was originally supposed to take effect last September, but Apple decided to postpone it to give developers more time to get ready. Due to these changes, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV apps will need to obtain permission from users to track their activity in other apps and websites using a random advertising identifier (IDFA).

The first time you launch applications that want to track user activity, you will be prompted to “Allow Tracking” or “Ask Not to Track”. Some developers have already voluntarily added this request to their software.

If the user selects “Ask not to track”, then Apple will block the application developer’s access to IDFA. In addition, it will be possible to manage your preferences in the “Settings”> “Privacy”> “Tracking”.

iOS

Several ad networks and companies have criticized Apple’s new privacy policy. Facebook says this decision will harm small businesses. Mark Zuckerberg called these actions self-serving and non-competitive.

The nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation called Facebook’s comments laughable, saying Mark Zuckerberg’s company actually fears financial losses and audience shrinkage if users learn more about how much personal data is collected. The developers of the Firefox browser also supported Apple’s updated privacy policy, calling it a “huge win for consumers.”

Google hasn’t publicly criticized Apple’s decision, but warned developers in its blog post yesterday that they could feel a “significant impact” on their revenue from Google’s advertising tools on iOS after ATT takes effect. The search giant also revealed that it will stop collecting IDFAs in its iOS apps to avoid using a window asking for permission to track user data.
