Brexit becomes reality

#After half a century of #European integration and four and a half years of a #Brexit saga full of twists and turns, the #United #Kingdom is living its last hours on #Thursday to the rhythm of #European rules and begins a new page in its history in a context of deep crisis.

#At 11:00 p.m. local time and GMT (midnight in #Brussels), marked by the gongs of #Big #Ben, #Brexit will become reality for the country, which officially left the EU on #January 31 but having benefited from a transition period to cushion the shock.

“The destiny of this great country now lies firmly in our hands,” #Prime #Minister #Boris #Johnson said #Wednesday evening.

#It is “a new beginning for the history” of the #United #Kingdom and “a new relationship with the EU as their most important ally”, added the great architect of this exit, after the express ratification #Wednesday by the #British #Parliament of the free trade agreement signed the same day by #Brussels and #London.

#If the deployment of a new anti-Covid vaccine overshadows the big leap in the #British press on #Thursday, the #Daily #Mail evokes “two giant leaps towards freedom”, the #Sun is delighted that #Brexit is “finally achieved” and The #Times y sees a “goodbye to all this”.

The trade deal reached in extremis avoids too abrupt a break and its potentially devastating consequences for the economy, but the free movement of goods and people to cross the border unimpeded will end.

#Exporters and importers will have to fill out customs declarations and risk seeing their goods slowed down at the border by controls. #Financial companies, a major sector in #London, will lose their automatic right to offer their services in the EU. #And UK universities will no longer be eligible for the #Erasmus exchange program.

#In front of the deputies #Wednesday, #Boris #Johnson expressed the hope that this course will allow “to move on to something else”. The task promises to be delicate: business circles have not hidden their fears about the consequences of this upheaval and the #British are emerging from a divisive period.

#Since the referendum of 23 #June 2016, won 51.9% by the “leave”, it has taken three #Prime #Ministers, hours of heated nightly parliamentary debates in #Westminster and three postponements before the #United #Kingdom cast off for good.

#Like this painful process, it was not until #Christmas #Eve that the laborious negotiations finally resulted in a trade agreement, leaving only a few days to implement its 1,246 pages.

#If it was adopted by the #British #Parliament on #Wednesday, MEPs will only vote in the first quarter of 2021, requiring provisional application.

“A country is leaving the EU for the first time after more than 45 years of living together (…) but we must look to the future” despite this “sad” day, commented on the LCI channel the secretary of ‘#French #State for #European #Affairs, #Clément #Beaune.

#Much to the relief of whole swathes of highly connected economies, the EU is giving the UK duty-free and quota-free access to its market of 450 million consumers. #But to avoid any unfair competition, it provides for sanctions and compensatory measures in the event of non-compliance with its rules on state aid, the environment, labor law and taxation.

#Regarding fishing, a difficult subject until the last hours, the agreement provides for a transition period until #June 2026, after which #European fishermen will gradually give up 25% of their catches. A result that deeply disappointed #British fishermen, spearheads of #Brexit who hoped more from the promises of independence and regained sovereignty hammered out by #Boris #Johnson.

#Despite his criticism of a trade deal he considers insufficient, #Keir #Starmer, the #Labor opposition leader, was optimistic, saying that “our best years are yet to come”.

#It is therefore a victory for #Boris #Johnson, triumphant at the polls on the promise to achieve #Brexit but since then put in difficulty by the #Covid-19 pandemic, with hospitals on the verge of rupture and an outbreak of contaminations. #Much of the population has been reconfigured, further clouding the outlook for an economy hit by its worst crisis in 300 years.

#Beyond the pandemic, the challenges are considerable for the government of #Boris #Johnson, which has promised to give the #United #Kingdom a new place in the world, summed up by the slogan “#Global #Britain”.

#However, he is preparing to lose a weighty ally with the departure of #Donald #Trump, a fervent supporter of #Brexit replaced in the #White #House by #Democrat #Joe #Biden, more #Europhile.

#Inside, he must bring together #Britons who are torn over #Brexit, to the point of seeing the unity of the country crack, #Northern #Ireland and #Scotland, who dream of independence, having voted in majority against leaving the EU.
