COVID-19 – Appearance in Africa of new “variants”: The WHO sounds the alert

#Following the appearance in #Africa of new “variants” of #Covid-19, the #World #Health #Organization (WHO) calls on countries to be vigilant.

The recent appearance in the #African region of new “variants” of #Covid-19 seems to have a stronger transmissibility. The alert is from the #World #Health #Organization (WHO) which calls on countries to strengthen surveillance and genomic analysis through the #African #Network of #Genome #Sequencing #Laboratories in order to detect any new mutations and strengthen efforts to stem the pandemic. #In a statement, WHO informs that #South #Africa has recently detected a new variant of #Sars-Cov2, which seems to be transmitted more easily. #And it is, according to WHO, likely linked to the current increase in #Covid-19 infections in the country. #Moreover, more analyzes are underway to determine the epidemiological significance of this mutation. #Nigeria is also carrying out more investigations on the variant identified in samples collected in #August and #October. #According to WHO #Regional #Director for #Africa, #Dr #Matshidiso #Moeti, “the appearance of new ‘variants’ of #Covid-19 is a phenomenon
current. #Nonetheless, those with a higher rate of transmission or high potential pathogenicity are of concern. #Essential investigations are underway to fully understand the behavior of the new mutant viruses and adapt the response accordingly ”. #She adds: “While the surveillance and detection of #Covid-19 are crucial elements of the response to the pandemic, public health measures such as hand washing, physical distancing and wearing a mask remain essential to limit infections. #Current prevention measures are also effective for the new ‘variants’ of #Sars-Cov2. ” WHO recalls that in #September 2020, it and the #Centers for #Disease #Control and #Prevention (#Africa #Cdc) launched a network of 12 laboratories in #Africa to strengthen the sequencing of the #Sars-Cov2 genome. #And as of #December 23, the document reports, 4,948 sequences have been produced in the region, representing only 2% of the 295 thousand 101 sequences produced worldwide so far. The same source reveals that #South #Africa, which is the source of most of the 4,948 sequences, has identified 35 lines of #Sars-Cov2, and #Nigeria 18.
#Continuing, the WHO reports that the new “variants” have appeared as #Covid-19 infections are on the increase in the 47 countries of the organization’s #African region, approaching the peak reached in #July 2020. #Over the years #Last 28 days, says WHO, #Algeria, #Botswana, #Burkina #Faso, #Democratic #Republic of #Congo, #Ethiopia, #Kenya, #Namibia, #Nigeria, #South #Africa and #Uganda have recorded the highest numbers of new cases, accounting for 90% of all infections in the #African region.
