The novel coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 1,806,072 people worldwide since the WHO office in #China reported the onset of the disease at the end of #December 2019, according to a report established by AFP from from official sources #Thursday at 11:00 GMT.

#More than 82,676,050 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed since the start of the epidemic, of which at least 51,918,900 are now considered cured.

The figures are based on daily reports from the health authorities in each country and exclude ex post revisions by statistical agencies, such as #Russia, #Spain and the #United #Kingdom.

#Since the start of the pandemic, the number of tests carried out has increased sharply and screening and tracing techniques have improved, leading to an increase in declared contaminations.

The number of cases diagnosed, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual total of contaminations, with a large proportion of the less serious or asymptomatic cases still remaining undetected.

#On the day of #Wednesday, 15,599 new deaths and 679,925 new cases were recorded worldwide.

The countries that have recorded the most new deaths in their latest reports are the #United #States with 3,927 new deaths, #Brazil (1,194) and #Mexico (1,052).

The #United #States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 342,414 deaths for 19,745,137 cases, according to the #Johns #Hopkins #University count.

#After the #United #States, the most affected countries are #Brazil with 193,875 deaths and 7,619,200 cases, #India with 148,738 deaths (10,266,674 cases), #Mexico with 124,897 deaths (1,413,935 cases), and the ‘#Italy with 73,604 deaths (2,083,689 cases).

#Among the hardest hit countries, #Belgium is the one with the highest number of deaths in relation to its population, with 168 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by #Slovenia (128), #Bosnia (123), #Italy (122), #North #Macedonia (119).

#Europe totaled 568,862 deaths for 26,300,009 cases on #Thursday at 11:00 GMT, #Latin #America and the #Caribbean 505,089 deaths (15,465,966 cases), the #United #States and #Canada 357,854 deaths (20,316,207 cases), the #Asia 218,751 deaths (13,862,834 cases), the #Middle #East 89,766 deaths (3,969,128 cases), #Africa 64,805 deaths (2,730,865 cases), and #Oceania 945 deaths (31,041 cases).

#This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the #World #Health #Organization (WHO).

#Due to corrections made by the authorities or late data releases, the 24 hour increase figures may not correspond exactly to those published the day before.
