Meng Wanzhou’s family exempted from travel ban to Canada

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou’s husband and children have received an exemption from Immigration Canada to enter the country and visit her at the Vancouver residence where she is assigned.

This was confirmed by Syrine Khoury, press attaché in the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“Ms. Meng’s family has been authorized to travel to Canada by officials from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada,” she said in a written statement, adding that everything was done in accordance with the laws and travel restrictions.

According to the CTV network, Huwaei’s executive husband Liu Xiazong landed in Canada last October. Their two children arrived in December. All three are still in the country.

Ms. Meng’s family members therefore took advantage of one of the few exemptions provided for the closure of Canadian borders.

Most of the exceptions relate to relatives of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Ms. Meng does not have citizenship or permanent residence.

Her family, however, was able to benefit from another exemption that allows the immediate family of people living temporarily in Canada, such as Ms. Meng, to enter Canada. The exemption letters were granted by an Immigration Department official to Huawei number 2’s husband and their two children. Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino has been made aware, according to information obtained by the QMI Agency.

Ms. Meng has been under house arrest in Vancouver since being arrested in 2018 because of an extradition request to the United States, where she is notably accused of fraud.

Days after Meng Wanzhou’s arrest in Vancouver, China arrested two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, on suspicion of espionage. More than two years later, they are still being held in prison by Beijing without parole, unlike Ms. Wanzhou, and have very limited consular access.
