#New measures, new reports and highlights: an update on the latest developments in the #Covid-19 pandemic around the world.

#China

#China has approved “under conditions” the marketing of a first anti-Covid vaccine when nearly 5 million people at risk have already been vaccinated in the country.

#This first green light for a vaccine produced by #Sinopharm with the #Institute of #Biological #Products in #Beijing and which is more than 79% effective according to this pharmaceutical group, will make it possible to generalize the vaccination of risk groups, namely the elderly and the people with underlying illnesses.

“The third step will be to vaccinate the entire population,” said #Deputy #Minister of #Health #Zeng #Yixin.

#Inde

#Indian authorities imposed a nighttime curfew on #New #Delhi and several of the country’s main cities on #New #Year’s #Eve on #Thursday to prevent the spread of the new variant of the coronavirus.

#In the #Indian capital, a curfew will be in force from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two days, with a ban on gatherings of more than five people.

#Japan

#Tokyo recorded more than 1,000 new cases of coronavirus on #Thursday, which is a new record and the establishment of a state of emergency may be necessary to stem the epidemic.

“For the coronavirus, there is no end of the year or public holiday. #In this winter season, we see the coronavirus spreading and the situation is extremely serious ”, warned #Tokyo #Governor #Yuriko #Koike.

#Prime #Minister #Yoshihide #Suga called an emergency ministerial meeting on the health situation.

#France

#Critics are mounting on the organization by the government of vaccination in #France where less than 200 injections have been carried out since #Sunday against thousands in #Germany or #Italy. The #Academy of #Medicine regretted #Thursday the start “very slow” of this campaign and considered the precautions taken “excessive”.

#At the same time, the number of #French people who have been tested has climbed, with more than 3 million virological tests carried out during #Christmas week, against 2.3 million a week before.

#New #Years #Eve

#Billions of humans will turn, in privacy, the page of the year 2020 marked by the #Covid-19 pandemic.

#After months of lockdowns, curfews, limitations due to a pandemic that has claimed more than 1.8 million lives, a majority of the planet’s inhabitants will follow the #New #Year’s celebrations from their couch.

#From #Sydney to #Rome, they will attend the fireworks and shows behind a television or computer screen provided the festivities have not been canceled.

#This is the case, for example, for part of the traditional religious celebrations of the #New #Year in #Nigeria, the most populous country in #Africa hit by a resurgence of the disease since the beginning of #December.

#Statistics

The pandemic has killed more than 1.8 million people worldwide for more than 82 million people infected, according to a report established by AFP #Thursday around 11:00 GMT according to official figures.

The #United #States is the country with the most deaths (342,414) and cases (19.74 million) since the start of the pandemic, ahead of #Brazil (193,875 deaths for 7.6 million cases) and #India (148,738 deaths for 10.26 million cases).

These figures do not take into account ex post revisions made by statistical agencies, such as in #Russia, #Spain and the #United #Kingdom.

#Thus on #December 28, the #Russian statistical office #Rosstat estimated that just over 186,000 deaths attributable to #Covid-19 in the country from #January to #November 2020.
