Laurent Gerra: “Robert Hossein wanted to do something grand again”

#Laurent #Gerra has imitated #Robert #Hossein, the actor and director who died on #Thursday at the age of 93. The comedian and the man of the theater were close friends.

#You often celebrated your birthdays together …

LAURENT GERRA. #Robert was from #December 30, 1927 and I from #December 29, 1967. There is this 7 between us and it was said that we had just one day of difference. #We often celebrated our birthdays together, yes. I always kept my evening for him. I haven’t seen him this year, but the last few times he was in good shape, he was still swarming with projects, he wanted to do something great again. #It was a brain always on the move. #He said his mother died at 100 and he would live to be very old. #He was very proud not to have a single white hair. #He was showing off his beautiful, natural black hair: ” #Did you see? I was telling myself that he still spent his birthday this #Wednesday. I thought of him yesterday, as if I had a hunch.

#What was the nature of your link?

I was going to see his plays and he would come to see me at the #Olympia. The first time we met, I was starting out in #Paris, it was in “Rien à cirer”, #Laurent #Ruquier’s show. #Of all the people there, he was the one that impressed me the most. #He had that charisma.

#He sounded intimidating, right?

#Yes very. #Even for me, when he entered my dressing room at the #Olympia. #He was very emotional. #He loved artists deeply. There was something not so common in our profession: he was very happy with the success of others. I never heard him say bad things about anyone. #His big sentence was: “My talent is to find it for others. #He was very curious by nature. #This is what made him a great director. #And innovative. #When he directs #Belmondo in the theater in “Kean”, it was something, with this change of scenery in the public eye. #It was not fashionable but he said that in the early days of the theater it was like that.

#And his great barnums from the last period, which inspired your imitations, with his sepulchral voice?

#He was still creating something new. #It was very original to have the public vote, to award a diploma to the spectators. #He knew how to captivate the public. #My imitations and parodies made him laugh. #He had a lot of humor, and culture. #He surrounded himself with brilliant people. I remember dinners with #Frédéric #Dard (#Editor’s note: the author of #San #Antonio) and #Monsignor #Di #Falco. #Dard had said something about faith and doubt, and #Robert had smiled at #Jean-Michel: “Did you hear, priest? #It is meditated … “

#Our favorites for fun and culture.

#From #San #Antonio to religion, is it a bit of a big gap?

#He was a little mystical. #He first loved literature and heritage. #Its culture allowed it to go into very different registers. A jack-of-all-trades that never stopped thinking.
