#In #Ghana, three weeks after the publication of the provisional results of the presidential election which give the winner, the outgoing #President, #Nana #Akufo-Addo, his main challenger, #John #Dramani #Mahama, still does not admit defeat. #He lodged an appeal on #Wednesday with the #Supreme #Court to request the cancellation of the ballot. #Is the virus of systematic contestation of election results taking root in #Ghana?

#We may have welcomed too early the holding without “major incidents” of the presidential election of #December 7 in #Ghana. The success of these electoral operations was perhaps hailed too early. #We remember that the day after the vote, international observers unanimously congratulated #Ghanaians for the model of democracy they maintain on a continent and in a sub-region increasingly agitated by the demon of problematic elections and uncertain electoral aftermath. #Especially at three days before the poll, the two main challengers, the outgoing #President, #Nana #Akufo-Addo and his predecessor, #John #Dramani #Mahama, signed a “peace pact” to commit themselves not to arouse the violence of the course. from voting until the results are announced. #Exemplary approach, that is certain.

#However, just after the vote, these commitments very quickly fell into oblivion. The two camps began to exchange virulent comments, the #National #Democratic #Congress (NDC) accusing the #New #People’s #Party (NPP) of fraud. #And long before the #Election #Commission, each side began to publish its own results, claiming victory. #However, on the evening of #December 9, 2020, the #Election #Commission proclaimed the provisional results with the victory of #Nana #Akufo-Addo.

#And the protest began in the NDC camp, which said it was ready to exhaust all avenues of appeal to claim its victory. The country then experienced major demonstrations, the culmination of which was the filing by #John #Dramani #Mahama of an appeal for annulment of the ballot before the #Supreme #Court of #Ghana, this #Wednesday, #December 30, 2020. #For him, the results of this election are “Unconstitutional, null and void”.

#This appeal is certainly the start of a legal battle that is likely to last several months, a bit like in 2012 when the current winner, #Nana #Akufo-Addo, who was in a losing position against the same challenger, had the same #Steps. #It took eight long months of proceedings and debates before the high court confirmed the victory of #John #Dramani #Mahama and #Nana #Akufo-Addo bowed to this verdict. #History is stammering, but in the opposite direction.

#Within the NDC, the party of #John #Dramani #Mahama, opinions are divided on the question of the appeal. #For some party leaders, it is useless to engage in this legal battle which promises to be long and costly; it would then be best to look to the future.

#In any case, these new challenges undoubtedly tarnish the democratic label that #Ghana could boast of where the alternation at the head of state was a reality since the departure of #Jerry #Rawlings, at the end of his two terms of office. democratic period in 2000.
