The establishments of the Groupe hospitalier du Havre (GHH), faced with the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, have reinforced security measures with access restrictions. The crisis unit meets every day.
HOW MANY CASES ?
Up to 110 Covid-19 hospitalizations last March at the time of confinement. At the moment, less than 28 patients are hospitalized in the Covid medicine unit. Between 4 and 5 in the intensive care unit which has 18 beds.
WHAT ARE THE MEASURES IN FORCE IN HOSPITALS IN HAVRAIS ?
Since mid-September, visits are no longer authorized in the care services except by individual medical decision. The visit of only one parent is allowed. In maternity ward, only the second parent is authorized under certain conditions. In pediatrics and neonatology, only one visit per day by the same identified parent. In geriatrics, visits authorized upon registration.
“The teams remain vigilant”
WILL THEY BE LIGHTENED, STRENGTHENED ?
« We are not at all today in the perspective of reopening, of widening access to our establishments, indicates Dr. Alain Fuseau, psychiatrist and president of the medical commission of the Le Havre hospital group. Our position is to try to hold on without further restricting access and without having to open new beds, because that strongly impacts the activity of caregivers. » The health and distancing rules are for the moment rather well respected at the GHH, but the teams remain vigilant. « We can see that, if there are no professionals at the entrances to the hospital to enforce the wearing of the mask properly adjusted to the face and the use of hydroalcoholic gel, there may be slackening. I see it even during my consultations, so we explain, we repeat : wash your hands, keep your distance … »
HOW IS GHH STAFF MORALE ?
« This is no longer the March-April configuration. At that time, with the drop in non-Covid activity, there were staff available and strong solidarity from all the teams. Today, the dynamic is no longer the same, as non-Covid activity continues. Healthcare professionals are very busy, they are tired, explains Dr Spindle. And then we all know that this situation will last for several months. You have to learn to live with the Covid in the hospital. In March, the hospital was there for the Covid. Today, we live with the Covid in the hospital but not only, because there are also all the other care activities. »
HAS THE HOSPITAL HIRED FOR SIX MONTHS ? S
ur non-medical staff, the GHH management team admits to being in great difficulty. With regard to nursing staff, the situation is not simpler. « What limits us is not the money, it is not the will to recruit which is very present. The problem is, there are no nurses on the market. And for the doctors, we use the interim », complete Dr Spindle.
“Let us remain very vigilant, no population is protected”
How many Covid patients do you have in Le Havre ?
Dr Alain Fuseau : “I can’t give exact numbers because it fluctuates every day. The Le Havre Hospital Group is extremely vigilant. We are in daily crisis cell. We have an open 28-bed Covid Medicine unit. It can be almost full or a little less depending on the day. We have variations and so much the better, many patients leave. We have a second one that can be activated if necessary. For now, we’re staying within reasonable limits. ”
And for the resuscitation part ?
“We did not reopen an intensive care unit. We manage to absorb the Covid in our usual resuscitation area with a capacity of 18 beds. In this unit, there are a quarter of Covid and three quarters of non-Covid. The situation is under control, but remains fragile. What we have observed in recent weeks is that we could have quite rapid variations in the number of Covid cases arriving in medicine and intensive care. In 24 hours, it can change. We had a day with six Covids at once. ”
Where do patients come from? ?
“Mainly from the Le Havre region. A week or so ago, we had transfers from the Évreux hospital, which was overwhelmed. Basically, the resuscitations of the former Haute-Normandie are full or even very full. The burden of Covid activity remains higher in Seine-Maritime than in Normandy as a whole. ”
Can the health situation of the GHH be compared to that of the start of confinement in mid-March? ?
“No, because in March we reached 110 Covid patients at GHH. On 28-bed units, we had up to four of these units opened in medicine and we had activated additional resuscitation beds. ”
Your message to the people of Le Havre ?
“Remain very vigilant, because today, no population is protected. We have young patients, pregnant women … We are seeing a positive rate of Covid-19 which is not negligible in the tests. We maintain particular vigilance for the elderly and residents of nursing homes. I cannot let it be said: there is no risk because this patient is 35 years old or because the lady is pregnant or because it is a child. ”
