Adrien Quatennens: “Yes to the determined struggle against radical Islamism, no to generalized suspicion”

Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his troops summoned to justify themselves. In the aftermath of the assassination of a teacher in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines), some, on the right but also on the left, accuse the leader of the rebels of having left the paths of universalism and turning a blind eye to a supposed separatist danger. They recall his participation in the march against Islamophobia last year or his attacks against Charlie weekly which according to him would have yielded to an identity drift. The deputy and coordinator of insubordinate France, Adrien Quatennens, who was at the rally in the Republic, disputes this trial in ambiguity. He calls for firmness without giving in to the stigmatization of a religion, which would precisely endanger national unity.

France rebellious very quickly called for a large gathering in tribute to the victim, in support of his family and the educational community but also in demonstration of our unity. Are you worried that this attack will reinforce the idea of a clash of civilizations?

We know that among the objectives of Islamist terrorists, there is that of dividing us. It was therefore necessary to pay tribute to Samuel Paty and to all the teachers but also to send a message of unwavering unity and firmness.

In the aftermath of the attack, some, on the right but also on the left, denounce the “hypocrisy” of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and rebels who would maintain a form of ambiguity about communitarianism. Did you have any form of complacency?

It is unbearable that in a moment which demands unity in the face of the adversary, political leaders like Manuel Valls or Xavier Bertrand accomplish their dirty political tasks. Once and for all: Jean-Luc Mélenchon is neither Islamist nor leftist! So what does the qualifier “Islamo-leftism” earn him? We have the Republic at heart, without the variable geometry and the small arrangements of those who insult us! When Madame Mireille Knoll was the victim of an anti-Semitic assassination, rebellious France took part in a march around her family. It was a republican necessity. We were the target of a violent group there, without any elected representative reacting. Should he not be there? No. When a mosque like in Bayonne is the target of an attack on French soil, it is also an unpatriotic act! In the absence of a government initiative to respond to this act of racist hatred, La France Insoumise took part in a march to which the CGT and the FSU called in particular. The participants sang there The Marseillaise, acclaimed secularism and the need for protection. Some preferred to zoom in on the small handful of participants who had other slogans than the reasons for this walk. Should it be deserted for all that? No. We are clear and sure of our Republican principles. Those who attack us, much less.

But did the left lack firmness?

On secularism? It’s clear. For example when Manuel Valls, minister in office attends the beatification of a cathedral or when François Hollande declares that “The Republic recognizes all cults” whereas the law of 1905 says precisely the opposite.

Your opponents would answer you that it is with Islamism that there is a problem today …

With Islamism which is a political ideology, yes. But not with Islam and Muslims. At a time like this, millions of our fellow Muslims are shocked to see murders being committed in the name of God. Yes to the determined struggle against radical Islamism. No to widespread suspicion of believers.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon asked for “acts” but you also say that the current legislative equipment is sufficient. What are you waiting for?

What the first elements we have reveal are that we are sorely lacking in the means to apply existing laws. How is it that this professor could have been threatened for more than a week on social networks without anything happening? It would be useful to give the police additional means of investigation and to develop effective intelligence techniques such as undercover. That we run after the real dangerous rather than after the balls of hash.

So the “separatism” bill is not necessary?

There will be provisions of this law that we will support. I am thinking, for example, of questions relating to foreign funding or schools outside the contract. Above all, you can count on La France Insoumise to make proposals that strengthen secularism as you have no idea. And then you will demand an account from those opposite who criticize us for a lack of clarity. For example, who will agree with the fact that the law of 1905 must apply throughout the territory and that the Concordat d’Alsace-Moselle must therefore be repealed?

You use the word “obscurantism”, not separatism. Do you have a problem?

We should put it in the plural. Several separatisms threaten the Republic and its promise of freedom, equality and fraternity. This is the case with the separatism of the very rich that Macron’s policies encourage while poverty is reaching record highs in the country. The Republic is not a neutral regime. The currency is an unfinished political project. When public services close, when associations disappear, when discrimination is not combated, the Republic retreats and others can move forward. Because understanding does not mean excusing, to fight terrorism, we must also understand why it is sometimes the children of the Republic who give in to the sirens of fanatics and remedy them.
