With the SATA SSD 870 QVO, Samsung Electronics today presents its first consumer SSD with a storage capacity of 8 TB. The SSD relies on second-generation QLC flash memory and thus on modern memory technology from the manufacturer. The 870 QVO offers a balanced mix of speed, space and reliability for private and professional users.
United: strong performance and high capacity
With the SATA SSD 870 QVO, consumers do not have to choose between high performance and large storage capacity. The 870 QVO offers both.
“The 870 QVO continues what the previous 860 QVO started. Based on QLC flash technology, it offers a capacity of up to 8 terabytes, improved read and write speeds compared to the previous model and increased reliability, ”says Daniel Maric, Product Manager Storage at Samsung Electronics GmbH. “With the 870 QVO, our customers get the advantages of an SSD in terms of memory sizes that we have only seen from HDD hard drives so far”
The 870 QVO achieves sequential read and write speeds of up to 560/530 MB / s2nd. Intelligent TurboWrite technology with variable SLC buffer3rd ensures that this performance can be maintained at all times.
Compared to the 860 QVO, the 870 QVO delivers random reading speeds up to 13% higher4th. In combination with the ample storage space, it is therefore particularly suitable when it comes to editing and saving images, videos, music or documents.
The optimized programs5 Data Migration 4.0 and Samsung Magician 6.1 offer a uniform, user-friendly design and additional functions. Magician, for example, now scans the SSD partially or completely in search of potential errors – and corrects them accordingly. The tried-and-tested cloning process of Data Migration also ensures in the current version that the data migrates easily from the old HDD to the new SSD.
With the MXK controller and advanced ECC algorithm, Samsung promises a limited manufacturer’s guarantee of 3 years while maintaining the total write data volume of up to 2,880 TB (for the 8 TB model)6.
Numbers that can be seen and read
With all the theory, the question arises: What does the user ultimately benefit from in everyday life? To illustrate: approximately 500 million text pages fit on 1 TB. Extrapolated, a storage with 8 TB holds around 8 million books – this corresponds to approximately half of all books in the German National Library7. But video enthusiasts will also get their money’s worth: The 870 QVO in its largest version can hold up to 1,000 hours of material in full HD, while it takes around 355 hours for 4K quality films8th.
Pricing and availability
The 1 TB model of the 870 QVO will be released on June 30, 2020. The versions with 2 TB and 4 TB will probably follow at the end of July 2020. With 8 TB capacity, the 870 QVO is expected to be available from the end of August 2020.
