Researchers solve puzzles about the giant Betelgeuse

Betelgeuse is a breathtakingly large star. In the so-called Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, in which the stars are classified according to their spectral type and their absolute brightness, it is classified among the red supergiants. Our sun would fit into this giant about a billion times, its diameter is a thousand times larger than that of our central star. If Betelgeuse were in the place of our sun, its surface would reach nearly the Jupiter orbit. His fire shines accordingly: In the visible light, the giant star shines about 10,000 times brighter than the sun.
