Kayaker missing in Lake Champlain: SQ requests public assistance

The Sûreté du Québec is asking the population for help in finding an 80-year-old experienced kayaker missing since Monday evening in Lake Champlain.

“Maybe people came across him or talked to him briefly during the evening. We would like these people to contact us, ”said Sergeant Ingrid Asselin, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec.

Montrealer Laurent Messier was last seen Monday afternoon, in the Saint-Armand sector, in Montérégie. At the time, he was boarding his kayak on Lake Champlain. He had to go to Venise-en-Québec, but never arrived at his destination.

His abandoned kayak was found by the Sûreté du Québec helicopter during the night of Monday to Tuesday. The boat was adrift in Lake Champlain, on the United States side.

Land, water and air searches continue Tuesday in the sector to find Mr. Messier.

The last time he was seen, he was wearing a yellow life jacket and a blue jersey. He was on a red kayak.

Anyone who sees this man is asked to communicate with 911. In addition, any information that may allow him to be found can be communicated to the Sûreté du Québec Criminal Information Center at 1 800 659-4264.
