He was one of the really big ones: With films like “Oh God …” or “Wealth is not a shame”, the director celebrated worldwide success. Now the New Yorker with Austrian roots has died at the age of 98, as his assistant Judy Nagy has now confirmed to the industry magazine “Variety”.

Carl Reiner was born in 1922 to Austrian immigrants in New York, served in the military after school and became an actor. For a long time, acting was only a minor matter for him. He then wrote film history primarily with the film “The dead don’t wear diamonds”. That was in 1982.

He shot the crème de la crème

With his astonishing montage technique, the director worked numerous original excerpts from famous film classics into the new plot so artfully that his idiotic private investigator (played by Steve Martin) meets almost everyone in the film noir like on a journey through the history of cinema 1940s had rank and name: from Barbara Stanwyck and Ava Gardner to Ingrid Bergman and James Cagney to Bette Davis, Lana Turner or Humphrey Bogart.

With “Wealth is No Shame” (1979) and “Solo for Two” (1984), also starring Steve Martin, Carl Reiner made further box office hits. As the inventor of the sitcom series “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, Carl Reiner also wrote American television history in the 1960s.

Carl Reiner also appeared in front of the camera every now and then. For example, he was seen in “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), “Ocean’s Twelve” (2004) and “Ocean’s Thirteen” (2007). Most recently he worked mainly on voice actors.

“I lived the best possible life”

Just three days before his death, Reiner had thanked Twitter for a long and fulfilling life in the short message service. By marrying his wife Estelle Lebost and raising three children together, he had led the “best possible life”.

His eldest son also works as a director. The 73-year-old has successfully followed in his famous father’s footsteps with films such as “Harry and Sally” (1989), “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) or “Where Love Falls” (2005).
