  • China has passed the controversial Hong Kong national security law, according to media reports.
  • The Standing Committee of the People’s Congress passed the law in Beijing on Tuesday.
  • It is primarily aimed at activities that Beijing regards as subversive, separatist or terrorist.

It is also said to punish “secret agreements” between activists and forces abroad. The democratic opposition in Hong Kong fears that it will become the target of the law. The vote was given unanimously by the 162 members of the Standing Committee, the South China Morning Post reported. There was initially no official confirmation of the farewell in Beijing.

Hong Kong’s head of government Carrie Lam, who went to the press shortly after the reports in the Chinese special administrative region, also refused to comment on the law. Details of the law, which will be included as an annex to Hong Kong’s Basic Law after its adoption, should not be published until the local time in Beijing in the afternoon. Until now, the text had been kept top secret.

International criticism

The security law has met with harsh criticism in Hong Kong and internationally. It is the most extensive encroachment on the autonomy of the Chinese special administrative region. Critics fear an end to the “one country, two systems” principle that the former British crown colony has been governed under Chinese sovereignty since its return in 1997. The communist leadership circumvents the Hong Kong parliament with the law.
