Prime Minister François Legault confirmed on Tuesday that the wearing of the mask will become mandatory for people 12 years of age and older in public transportation starting July 13, without fines, however.

A two-week transition period will follow the entry into force of the new standard, after which operators of transportation services may deny access to violators.

Quebec also counts on the collaboration of citizens rather than on a coercive approach to implement the obligation. “There will be no police,” said Prime Minister François Legault during his press briefing. No ticket will be issued, but the situation may change depending on the development of the situation.

Persons suffering from a particular medical condition preventing them from wearing a mask will be exempt from the measure.

The slackening of vigilance observed in recent weeks therefore forces the authorities to make face covering compulsory in public transport, where physical distance is often impossible.

“When you wear a mask, you are not shy, you are just respectful,” insisted the Prime Minister.

Regarding businesses or residential buildings, Quebec continues to “strongly recommend” the wearing of a mask, without obliging it. The situation could change, however, said François Legault.

18 additional deaths in Quebec

COVID-19 still kills Quebec; authorities report 18 new deaths and 68 new cases.
