We tell you everything you need to know about the next edition of the most important club tournament in the world.

The UEFA Champions League has had to adapt its schedule to the global emergency that has arisen as a result of the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, so the start of the next edition will be delayed by a month, taking as a date defined and confirmed by UEFA on October 20.

DRAWS AND CALENDAR


WHEN IS IT DRAWN?

The draw will be held in the city of Athens and the date would be between the first weeks of October.

WHEN IS IT PLAYED?

  • 1st Day: October 20 and 21
  • 2nd Conference: October 27 and 28
  • 3rd Conference: November 3-4
  • 4th Conference: November 24 and 25
  • 5th Day: December 1 and 2
  • Day 6: December 8 and 9

(The tournament will start as usual with the previous phase to be played on August 3 and 10 in a single match)

WHERE WILL THE FINAL BE


Ataturk Stadium

The final will be held at the Ataturk Olympic, located in Turkey and which was to be the venue for this year’s final. It has a capacity of 76,000 spectators and will receive the second final of its history, recalling the epic edition of 2004-2005, when Liverpool defeated AC Milan on penalties.


RULES TO CONSIDER


  • 26 teams enter the UEFA Champions League group stage directly, including the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League champions, and six do so through the qualifying phase
  • All teams eliminated in the UEFA Champions League qualification will have a second chance at the UEFA Europa League
  • 17 teams enter the UEFA Europa League group stage directly, with ten arriving from the UEFA Champions League play-offs plus 21 arriving from the two distinct routes of the qualification phase (UEFA Europa League champion and league squares)
  • There will be a preliminary round in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League (to be played as a mini-tournament in single-match qualifying format) and for the UEFA Europa League (play with double-match qualifying)
  • There are no changes in the formats of the group stage onwards, but the schedules of the matches in the UEFA Champions League will be staggered, 18:55 and 21:00, as has been the case since last season.


COMPETITION FORMAT


A total of 26 teams are automatically ranked based on the access list based on UEFA rankings by federations for club competitions at the end of the 2019/2020 season.

The classifieds will be:

  • UEFA Champions League champion (1)
  • UEFA Europa League champion (1)
  • The first four classified of the federations from 1st to 4th place in the ranking: Spain, Germany, England, Italy (16)
  • The first two of the 5th and 6th federations in the ranking: France, Russia (4)
  • The champions of the federations from 7th to 10th place in the ranking: Portugal, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey (4)

– If the UEFA Champions League champion qualifies for the group stage via his national championship, the vacancy will be filled with the champion of the 11th ranking federation (Czech Republic), who otherwise will compete on the route of the champions

– If the UEFA Europa League champion qualifies for the group stage via his national championship, the vacancy will be filled by the third-placed fifth-ranked federation (France), who would otherwise compete on the league route

– A federation can have a maximum of five teams in the group stage
The classification

Two access routes are maintained:

Champions route (4 places in the group stage)

Champions who continue to rank in the Czech Republic federation from the ranking onwards. From now on he will have a preliminary round in addition to three qualification rounds and the play-offs:

  • Preliminary round (played as a mini tournament with single-game playoffs): four teams enter
  • First qualifying round: 33 teams enter in addition to the preliminary round winner
  • Second qualifying round: three teams enter in addition to the 17 winners of the first qualifying round
  • Third qualifying round: Two teams enter in addition to the ten winners of the second qualifying round
  • Play-offs: two teams enter in addition to the six winners of the third qualifying round

All teams eliminated on this route will be eligible to participate in the UEFA Europa League by entering the qualifying phase or the group stage in stages if they fall in the playoffs.

League route (2 places in the group stage)

Now they are made up of the third-place finishers of the federations of France and Russia, and of the runners-up of Portugal, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Greece. In total it has three rounds:

  • Second qualifying round: six teams enter
  • Third qualifying round: Five teams enter in addition to the three winners of the second qualifying round
  • Play-offs: with the four winners of the third qualifying round

All teams eliminated on this route will be eligible to participate in the UEFA Europa League by entering the qualifying phase or the group stage in stages if they fall in the playoffs.
