“Alarming increase” in new cases
Beaches, bars and cinemas remain closed for the coming long weekend: In view of the rapid increase in new infections, several states in the USA are reversing the relaxation of their corona requirements.
- Several U.S. states are reintroducing corona restrictions
- For Sunday, the authorities in the United States reported nearly 40,000 new infections, as data from Johns Hopkins University showed.
- There are nearly 2.6 million confirmed infections and 126,000 deaths in the US to date.
In view of rising infection numbers, several US states and companies are suspending planned easing measures. An overview:
Los Angeles County reports an “alarming increase in new cases, positive test results and hospital admissions,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of public health.
In the Los Angeles district, the beaches will remain closed this weekend. Bicycle paths, parking lots and piers are also not accessible from Friday to Monday, the district said on Monday evening. The traditional fireworks for the national holiday (July 4th) were also canceled.
With thousands of new infections every day, the “risk” of crowds on the beaches is unacceptable, Janice Hahn, who is responsible for the district, said on Twitter.
Bars, fitness centers and cinemas in Arizona have to close again: In view of a rapid increase in new infections, the southwestern US state has reversed the relaxation of its corona requirements. Governor Douglas Doucey said Monday that events with over 50 attendees are now banned again, just a week after US President Donald Trump’s big appearance in Arizona. Doucey’s order is initially valid until the end of July.
There are around 75,000 confirmed coronavirus infections in the state, which has a population of over seven million. Recently the number of new infections had risen rapidly.
In view of the increasing number of new infections in the south of the country, the state of New Jersey postponed Thursday’s permission for restaurants to be able to cater for guests again in closed rooms.
In Texas, bars were recently closed.
The state of Nevada postponed the next stage of its easing from Monday to late July. Governor Steve Sisolak appealed to citizens to continue wearing a mask in public and to adhere to the recommended safety distance.
Two counties in Florida have announced that their beaches will be closed for the coming weekend – and thus for the national holiday on July 4th. The largest US cinema operator AMC will allow its playhouses until July 30 instead of July 15, as previously planned.
New York City:
The big fireworks on July 4th for US Independence Day will be spread over several days this year in the metropolis of New York. From Monday, there will be around five minutes of fireworks every evening in one of the five New York boroughs, explained the organizer, the Macy’s department store.
Because of the corona virus, it should be prevented that, as usual, tens of thousands watch the spectacle together on the river banks of the city on Saturday. This year, the individual fireworks would be cut together in a two-hour TV special, which also stars like John Legend, The Killers and Black Eyed Peas, announced the NBC on Monday.
