15,000 jobs in Europe gone: Airbus job cuts hit Germany hardest

The European aircraft manufacturer plans to cut 15,000 jobs in the commercial aircraft sector. Germany is particularly affected.
<p>Up to 10,000 jobs could be lost. That was the fear in mid-May. Now it gets worse. Airbus plans to cut 15,000 jobs in civil aircraft across Europe. The aircraft manufacturer reported this on Tuesday evening (June 30).

At the end of last year, the group employed 81,000 people in the civil aircraft division, most of them full-time. It therefore cuts around 19 percent of all jobs. “Airbus is facing the worst crisis this industry has ever experienced,” explains CEO Guillaume Faury.

Around 6000 jobs in Germany

Airbus announced in April that it would reduce aircraft emissions by a third. Before the crisis, 60 A319, A320 and A321 rolled out of the factory per month. Now there are still 40. The A330 has been reduced from 40 to 24 annually, the A350 from around 115 to 72. «The measures we have taken so far have enabled us to cushion the first shock. Now we have to make sure that we emerge from the crisis as a healthy, global leader, ”said Faury.

The job cuts are to be completed by summer 2021. Germany is most affected. The aircraft manufacturer plans to cut 5,100 jobs there. The number also includes a further job reduction at the subsidiary Premium Aerotec. The manufacturer of aircraft structures with its headquarters in Augsburg, however, announced 900 job cuts before the Corona crisis. Overall, the minus in the Federal Republic is around 6000 jobs.

Discussion with social partners follows

5,000 jobs are on the strike list in France, 1,700 in Great Britain, 900 in Spain and 1,300 in the rest of the world. However, the details of the cut still have to be agreed with the social partners, Airbus said.
