Barrier gestures, vaccination … why the flu has disappeared this year

#We could feel the trend coming, but it is confirmed with the latest figures from #Public #Health #France. #It’s quite surprising, but, despite the cold, which usually causes an increase in influenza viruses at this time of year, this year they have completely disappeared from the radar. #In completely new proportions.

#Usually, influenza causes hospitalizations in intensive care in many fragile, elderly, or patients with respiratory pathologies. #This affects several hundred patients per week, when the flu epidemic is here. #This is not the case at all this year. “Since #October 5, 2020, no serious case of influenza has been reported by the services participating in this surveillance,” explains in its latest epidemiological bulletin #Public #Health #France, published this #Wednesday. #This is very good news, given that the flu causes 10,000 to 15,000 deaths per year each year, due to its complications.

#Can the absence of the flu be due to under-detection by the epidemiology services, overwhelmed by the #Covid-19? #This is not the case, says SPF. The “flu” tests are carried out, but they confirm that the flu level is infinitesimal. “#In hospitals, since week 40, among the 20,073 results transmitted to the #National #Reference #Center, ten samples have been found to be positive for an influenza virus”, specifies #Public #Health #France. #In detail, these are “six type B viruses, including one in a patient returning from a trip to #West #Africa, three type A viruses (H3N2), and one type A virus not subtyped ”.

The same observation is made in city medicine. “Since week 40, among the 436 nasopharyngeal swabs analyzed, a type B / #Victoria influenza virus has been detected. #Samples are taken as part of the surveillance of the #Sentinels network for acute respiratory infections (ARI) observed in general medicine in mainland #France, ”confirms SPF.

#While it wreaks havoc in nursing homes every year, the flu is totally absent. “Since week 40, for approximately 10,000 elderly communities in #France, 13 episodes of grouped cases of acute respiratory infection unrelated to SARS-CoV-2 have been reported. #No confirmed case of influenza has been identified among these notified episodes, ”notes #Public #Health #France.

The influenza virus killer #Sars-Cov2?

#How to explain this virtual disappearance of the flu, while also the #Covid-19 is wreaking havoc, and the sum of the two would plunge hospitals and liberal doctors a little more into the abyss? “We know that barrier gestures, in particular wearing a mask, strongly contribute to reducing the flu. #This is the most plausible explanation. The massive use of hydroalcoholic gel in the population has greatly contributed to this eradication of influenza viruses, ”explains #Doctor #Serge #Smadja, #Secretary #General of SOS Médecins.

The massive use of influenza vaccination, which has been a great success this year, especially among those over 75, is also an explanatory factor. #Thus, 13 million #French people have already been immunized against around 10 million last year.

A tour of the news to start the day

#Can we also imagine that the #Sars-Cov2 virus has, in a way, killed the influenza viruses? “There are still a lot of mysteries to be unraveled about viruses. #But we have to ask ourselves this question, when we see that the flu is no longer present at all, ”adds #Dr #Smadja. #Because, of course, the absence of influenza viruses is not a #French exception. #Europe is in the same situation.

#And this has also been seen in the southern hemisphere. #From #June to #September, the winter flu epidemic occurs there, due to the different climate. #However, this season – surprise -, it hardly took place. #Traffic was extremely low in #Australia, #New #Zealand, #South #Africa and #Argentina, experts noted, which is unprecedented. #It remains to be seen whether this is only an annual phenomenon, or whether it is sustainable over time.
