Eric Bana reveals his wife was the reason he signed on to Aussie film The Dry without seeing the script

#Eric #Bana‘s stellar performance in his new #Aussie movie is generating plenty of buzz — and he has his wife to thank for that.

The actor plays #Detective #Aaron #Falk in the big-screen adaptation of The #Dry, a thrilling whodunnit based on #Australian author #Jane #Harper’s international bestseller from 2016.

#But if it weren’t for #Bana’s wife of 23 years, #Rebecca, he may have never come across the book. #She was the one who urged him to read the novel and, as she predicted, he was hooked.

“I always listen when it comes to my wife and when it comes books,” the 52-year-old tells 9Honey #Celebrity while promoting the film. “#She’s got an amazing track record. I think every adaptation I’ve been a part of — and there’s been quite a few — has been a result of being passed across the pillow. #With the exception of #Black #Hawk #Down, every adaptation I’ve been in, my wife has read the book and recommended it.”

#In The #Dry, #Bana plays a federal police investigator who returns to his regional hometown in #Victoria after his childhood friend, #Luke #Hadler, allegedly kills his family in a murder-suicide. #But in order to solve the shocking crime, #Aaron must first revisit the mystery #Luke was at the centre of when they were still teenagers.

#It is through a series of haunting flashbacks that #Aaron begins to wonder if the tragic events could’ve been prevented all those years ago.

“I loved it as a thriller. I was immediately and emotionally attached to the story because of the depiction of the landscape,” #Bana reveals. “I think #Jane #Harper writes in such a vivid fashion that I just could see the film. #And then selfishly, egotistically, you plant yourself into the centre of the main character #Aaron #Falk and I just thought it would be an amazing thing to be a part of.”

#In fact, after reading the book, #Bana excitedly signed on to the film before the script was even written. Then when he learnt that #Aussie director #Robert #Connolly would be directing, he knew he was in good hands.

The creative duo not only worked together in the critically acclaimed drama #Romulus, #My #Father back in 2007, but for the last 10 years, they have shared an office in #Port #Melbourne and developed a strong friendship.

“#It’s a gift to make films and I have to pinch myself that I get to be a film director,” 53-year-old #Connelly tells 9Honey #Celebrity. “#But the fact that along the 20 years of my career I’ve made a lot of friends and I get to work with them is just wonderful … I couldn’t believe my luck when I got the opportunity to come on board as the director.”

#For #Connolly, it was a no-brainer #Bana was the perfect actor to play the lead. #In his eyes, it was about time #Australia had its very own homegrown detective, and #Bana fits the bill.

“#Aaron #Falk is someone who is damaged by secrets and mystery in the past, so you need an A-triple-plus actor who can actually deliver for you that kind of history. #You know, 25 years of damage kind of bubbling underneath,” #Connolly explains. “#It’s really tricky. #It’s not about being demonstrative as an actor — it’s about playing a very nuanced, sophisticated and subtle kind of performance as you navigate that.

“The #British have the #James #Bond films, the #Americans have the #Jack #Reachers. #It’s an #Australian detective. #Who else would play it?”

The movie was filmed back in 2019 in the #Wimmera region of #Victoria, just a four-hour drive from #Melbourne. #After a painstaking search to bring to life the location #Harper vividly depicts in her book, #Connolly stumbled upon the region and was instantly enchanted. The locals were equally taken by the cast and crew and welcomed them with open arms.

“#It had to be authentic. #We wanted people who live in regional #Australia to see themselves depicted,” the director recalls. “#We filmed in about 15 satellite towns right through the region. #Without expectation, people made properties available, they were extras, they acted in [the film]… I mean, even just to get the crew out there, there wasn’t enough accommodation. #Some people moved in together to free up a house so we could stay in the house. #Pretty incredible.”

#And #Bana hopes to film more movies here on home soil — it’s just a matter of finding the right project.

The actor waited 13 years since #Romulus, #My #Father to discover another great #Aussie film to sink his teeth into, and he hopes he won’t have to wait that long for his next local production.

“I’m really desperate to find projects like this, but they are just really, really rare,” admits #Bana, who is also a producer on The #Dry. “The writing of this quality is the same with #Romulus, #My #Father, which [Robert and I] did together 13 years ago. #It’s hard to find original pieces of work of this standard … #So we’re really happy with the end result.

“#We feel quite fortuitous that something of this quality and stature finally came across in a way that we could both be involved because it’s pretty rare. #Both #Romulus, #My #Father and The #Dry, in terms of literary works, they’re just so special and we could not feel prouder and so lucky to be part of both of them.”

The #Dry is in cinemas on #January 1. #Watch the full trailer below.
