The Paris Stock Exchange looks gray before New Year’s Eve

The #Paris #Bourse lost 0.61% shortly after opening #Thursday, for a shortened session due to the #New #Year’s #Eve celebrations and at the end of a roller coaster year marked by the #Covid-19 pandemic.

The CAC 40 index fell 34.21 points to 5,565.20 points around 9:30 am the day after a drop of 0.22%. #On a #European scale, #London dropped 1.35% while #Frankfurt was closed.

#Investors are taking advantage of the holidays to deal with current affairs in very limited volumes of business, noted market participants still present.

#In addition, there is two bad news: the slowdown in manufacturing activity in #China in #December, and the #Trump administration’s announcement of additional tariffs on #European products, three weeks before the presidential transition.

#According to #Washington, the #European #Union has levied too many taxes on #American products in the context of the dispute between #Boeing and the #European aircraft manufacturer.

#Barring any surprise, the #Parisian index should show a decline of 6.5% to 7% over the year as a whole. A much worse fall had been anticipated in the first part of the year, when the outbreak of the pandemic had sent the world stock markets to the mat. #Since then, the discovery of effective vaccines against #Covid-19 has boosted the clues on the planet.

#Among the other #European places, #Frankfurt recorded an annual gain of 3.55%. #London on the other hand dropped 14.28% in 2020 before its closing on #Thursday, and #Milan 5.42%.

#On #Wall #Street, the #Dow #Jones is up 6.56% over twelve months, the #Nasdaq 43.44%, helped by a surge in technology stocks due to global lockdowns, and the S&P 500 of 15.52 %.

#In the bond market, the yield on the #French ten-year #Treasury bill was about to end the year around -0.34%, meaning that investors are paying to hold #French debt. #This is a historically low level linked to massive purchases of public debt by the #European #Central #Bank to fight the crisis.

#On the value front, #Airbus fell 0.82% to 90.50 euros. The aeronautics sector is one of the sectors affected by the new taxes planned by the #Trump administration, with certain non-sparkling wines and spirits.

#Axa sold 0.72% to 19.53 euros after announcing an agreement with its #Italian counterpart #Generali to sell its insurance activities in #Greece for an amount of 165 million euros.
