Libyan war amputees long wait for prosthesis

“#Amputation was inevitable”: #Radwan #Jibril was wounded in 2011 during fighting in #Libya. #If he is lucky enough to be fitted with a prosthesis, it is more difficult for thousands of #Libyan amputees who have been victims of shells or mines in this country in conflict for ten years.

A new orthopedic center is due to open in #March in #Misrata (west). #It aims to provide prostheses to all amputees in #Libya, in the grip of chaos and divisions since the revolt that led to the fall of #Muammar #Gadhafi’s regime in 2011.

The country has been ruled since 2015 by two rival authorities: the #Government of #National #Unity (GNA), recognized by the UN, and a power in the #East embodied by #Marshal #Khalifa #Haftar.

#It was in his hometown of #Misrata that #Radwan #Jibril was “injured in the leg by shrapnel”.

“#Despite several medical stays abroad, the amputation was inevitable because the wound was poorly treated. #It was a shock,” said the 38-year-old bearded #Libyan. “I was fitted with a prosthesis in #Italy but it took me a while to get used to it”.

#He gradually tamed this artificial limb – this “foreign body” as he calls it – and, with the help of his family, opened a fishmonger in #Misrata where he moves from stall to stall. other, the right leg stiff.

– “#Growing demand” –

#Mohamad #Al-Nouri, 28, lost a hand when he fought in 2019 in the ranks of the #Tripoli-based GNA to repel an offensive by #Marshal #Haftar against the capital.

#Originally from #Zaouia (west), he has an artificial hand but is waiting to go to #Germany for the installation of a permanent prosthesis.

“I don’t think I can go back to the cafe where I worked (…), I will still need a lot of time to regain my self-confidence,” he breathes.

The clashes have left thousands of amputees since 2011 in #Libya.

The #National #Center for #Prostheses is to be “officially opened in #March 2021” in a brand new building in #Misrata to offer its services to victims of the fighting in particular, #Al-Sadeq #Al-Haddad, its director, told AFP.

“#More than 3,000 amputees are on our waiting lists but their number is actually much higher and” at least 20% of them have disabilities requiring the installation of a prosthesis, “he said.

– “#New man” –

The health infrastructures having been destroyed by the fighting, the war wounded most often go for treatment abroad, at the expense of the #State.

The future center will allow the government to save “significant sums”, according to the director.

“A team of #Hungarian specialists will train technicians and run a rehabilitation service for a year,” he said.

#And, in response to a “growing demand for help from amputees,” a partnership was entered into with the rehabilitation department of the #University of #Misrata, created with the support of the #International #Committee of the #Red #Cross and the GNA.

#This has already enabled many of them to access care at the university: “#Since 2016, 1,000 prostheses have been placed” in this department by #Libyan technicians trained abroad, underlines #Mr. #Haddad.

#Badreddine #Moftah, one of these orthoprosthetists, chose his profession “after having met so many amputees since 2011”. #In 2019, he followed a one-year internship in #Germany and then returned to his country to practice there.

#Despite the rudimentary equipment of the university laboratory, he painstakingly fabricates plaster sockets to cover the stump before placing a prosthesis. #Under the watchful eyes of two students.

“#In five years, we hope to be able to provide prostheses to all amputees in #Libya,” said #Al-Sadeq #Al-Haddad. “#It will help them get their lives back on track with psychological and physical support.”

#This is at least the case of #Radwan #Jibril, who assures that his handicap has made him “a new man”.
