I#Liquor sales will no longer be allowed after 8 p.m. #Thursday night and the ban will continue until 9 a.m. the next morning, said #Dr. #Bonnie #Henry, the province’s chief health officer, on #Wednesday.

“The goal is to reduce late night alcohol consumption which leads to what we know to be risky behavior,” she said.

The public health ordinance prohibits the sale of alcohol in restaurants, bars and shops during this period.

#Ms #Henry said it was to try to prevent festive gatherings in person, especially in resort towns where #New #Year’s celebrations are common.

“A lot of times, from a public health standpoint, it’s fueled by people who overdo alcohol,” she said.

#Despite the last-minute nature of the order, #Ms #Henry said officials have been discussing it for some time.

“We felt – given what we were hearing and seeing about what was planned for [jeudi] evening, which we saw over the past weekend – that it was safer for us to take action, ”she explained.

The chief medical officer of health added that the order was intended to minimize the impact on restaurants by allowing the sale of alcohol during part of the evening instead of imposing a blanket ban.

#Restaurants have done a good job following the guidelines as they go, #Ms #Henry said, adding that the problems start when there is extra alcohol consumption later in the evening.

#Ian #Tostenson, president and CEO of the #Restaurant and #Foodservices #Association of #British #Columbia, said his group was “deeply disappointed” with the timing of the new public health order.

“We have to do what we have to do from a health point of view, but what I do not understand is that there was absolutely no consultation,” he argued. “#We all knew the #New #Year was approaching.”

The #Vancouver #Police #Department unveiled its own safety guidelines on #Wednesday, advising people not to go out after 10 p.m. except with immediate family or members of their household.

#More police will be deployed to the entertainment districts of #Gastown and #Granville to monitor behavior, police said.
