COVID-19 in Quebec | New record of cases, fragile hospital capacities

#While #Quebec reports 2819 new COVID-19 infections on #Thursday, shattering a new record, 62 additional deaths are reported. #If a drop in hospitalizations is observed, new projections suggest, however, that an overrun of dedicated beds in hospitals is “likely” in #Montreal within the next three weeks.

These new data bring the total number of people infected in the province to 202,641. #Of the 62 new deaths identified by the authorities, 22 have occurred in the last 24 hours. #Since the start of the pandemic, 8,226 #Quebecers have succumbed to COVID-19.

#Regarding hospitalizations, the total number decreased by 36 compared to the previous day, with a cumulative of 1175. #Of these, the number of people in intensive care increased by 13, for a total of 165 .

#As for the vaccine, 3,942 doses were administered yesterday, for a total of 29,250. #On #Twitter, the #Minister of #Health and #Social #Services, #Christian #Dubé, was delighted by this news data. “The target of 27,000 doses administered has been exceeded, which is excellent news to end the year. #To celebrate the #New #Year, let’s take advantage of the moments with our loved ones, in our family bubble, ”he said. #Finally, 36,620 samples were taken on #December 29, for a total of 4,882,251.

#In #Ontario, authorities have identified 3,328 new infections in the past 24 hours, a new high, and 56 other deaths linked to the virus. #Health #Minister #Christine #Elliott said 888 of the new cases were in #Toronto, 431 in #Peel #Region and 418 in #York #Region. #She also mentioned that there were 257 new cases in #Windsor-Essex #County and 194 in #Ottawa.

#Almost 63,900 tests have been performed since the last daily update. #Separately, a #London hospital declared itself free from COVID-19 outbreaks after 23 deaths and more than 150 infections.

#In #Quebec, remember that the daily report on data on COVID-19 will end on the 1is and #January 2.

#Exceeding to predict?

#In new models of the pandemic published #Thursday afternoon, the #National #Institute of #Excellence in #Health and #Social #Services (INESSS) warns that the situation in #Montreal is very fragile in hospitals. “#For the first time, an overrun of dedicated capacities within the next three weeks is likely (risk of more than 50%), especially since nearly two-thirds of the designated beds are already occupied,” writes the organization government.

#Unfortunately, if the trend continues, this will have to be compensated in particular by additional offloading of non-COVID treatments in our hospitals.

#Christian #Dubé, #Minister of #Health

#As for #Quebec in general, the group’s projections also predict “an increase in the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients” over the next few days.

#In most other regions of the province, the situation remains relatively stable, according to INESSS, which specifies, however, that nearly 60% of the beds designated for the coronavirus “are still occupied”. “#Planned limit overruns still cannot be ruled out in some hospitals,” it says, adding the risk of increased outbreaks in hospitals “remains a major concern.” #An increase in this chapter could indeed “reduce the room for maneuver of affected hospitals,” worries the #Institute.

#Remember that the organization’s forecasts are based on the cases of COVID-19 that were declared between #December 21 and 27. #In addition to bed availability, other factors influence hospital capacity, the report adds, such as the availability of staff and equipment.
