The pandemic continued to accelerate in Africa this week


The coronavirus pandemic has continued to accelerate in #Africa over the past seven days, confirming a trend that began in early #December: here are the significant developments over the past week.

#An important indicator, however, the number of cases diagnosed only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections and comparisons between countries should be taken with caution, as testing policies differ from one country to another.

#Deceleration in most areas

The pandemic decelerated sharply this week around the world, with 574,500 new cases recorded per day (-10% compared to the previous week), according to a report established by AFP.

#Africa is the only continent to have experienced an acceleration of contaminations (+ 11%) this week, in line with previous weeks. The new cases there are in clear increase since the beginning of the month.

#Elsewhere, contaminations decelerated sharply in #Latin #America / #Caribbean (-13%), the #United #States / #Canada (-11%), #Europe (-11%) and #Asia (-7%). The pandemic has stabilized in the #Middle #East (0%), while the virus is hardly circulating in #Oceania (26 cases per day, -30%).

#Europe and the #United #States / #Canada, the two areas that have diagnosed the most cases this week (respectively 220,900 and 193,000 per day), concentrate nearly three quarters (72%) of the contaminations recorded this week in the world.

#Main accelerations

#Egypt is the country where the epidemic is accelerating the most (+ 80%, 1,200 new cases per day), among those having recorded more than 1,000 daily cases during the past week. #Ireland (+ 61%, 1,100), #Israel (+ 49%, 4,600), #Japan (+ 23%, 3,400), #South #Africa (+ 20%, 12,100), #Lebanon (+20 %, 2100) and the #United #Kingdom (+ 20%, 40,500).

#Stronger declines

The sharpest decline is observed in #Azerbaijan (-57%, 1300 new cases per day), ahead of #Croatia (-51%, 1200), #Bulgaria (-48%, 700), #Hungary (-43%, 1600) , #Georgia (-33%, 1600) and #Belgium (-30%, 1800).

The most contaminations

The #United #States is by far the country with the highest number of new infections this week, with 186,600 new cases daily, ahead of the #United #Kingdom (40,500) and #Brazil (36,200). The trend is improving in the #United #States (-12%) and #Brazil (-22%), but deteriorating in the #United #Kingdom (+ 20%).

#As a proportion of the population, excluding micro-state, #Lithuania is the country with the most cases this week (666 per 100,000 inhabitants), ahead of #Panama (521), the #Czech #Republic (516), #Montenegro (433) , the #United #Kingdom (417), #Sweden (409) and the #United #States (395). #Of the 26 countries with an incidence rate above 200, 22 are #European.

#Death

The #United #States has recorded the most deaths in the past week (2,329 per day on average), ahead of #Brazil (665), #Mexico (655), #Germany (591), #Russia (566) and the #United #Kingdom (500).

The pandemic has killed more than 1.8 million people worldwide since the end of #December, for nearly 83 million confirmed infections. The #United #States remains the most bereaved country (342,414 dead), ahead of #Brazil (193,875) and #India (148,738).
