“There is an urgent need to reduce expenses and therefore to sell players”

#Sell or perish? The shortcut is a bit easy, but the idea is there. #While the winter transfer market will open its doors on #Saturday #January 2, #Vincent #Chaudel, sports economist and founder of the #Sport #Business #Observatory, explains to RMC #Sport the issue of the upcoming transfer window for clubs in #France, in great difficulty after the health crisis and that of TV rights.

“The problem for #French football today is that it has certain expenses – the salaries of the players – and uncertain income, summarizes the specialist. TV rights are down by 250 million euros on the first part of the championship (because of non-payments from #Mediapro, editor’s note), and we do not yet know the amount for the second part of the championship, nor over the next three seasons. #In addition to that there is always the absence audience in the stands. “

“#When you need to sell the most, you find yourself in the weakest position”

#Which leads to a considerable loss of ticketing revenue … “#All of this means that there is an urgent need to reduce expenses and therefore to sell players”, warns #Chaudel. #Problem: it will be much less easy than in previous seasons.

“#Foreign clubs are also in difficulty, it suffices to see the last transfer window in #Spain, and the clubs which are used to making their market in #France, the #English clubs, now have the new constraints of #Brexit, recalls the economist #In other words: when we need to sell the most, we find ourselves in the weakest position. #It is very worrying for the economy of #French football. “

“#We risk entering a vicious circle”

#And #Chaudel to evoke an increasingly realistic disaster scenario: “#Olivier #Letang, for example, said last week that without the change of owner at LOSC, the club would have been in default as of #January. C #This is to say whether the situation is problematic. (…) #All the clubs are not in the same state, but we risk seeing bankruptcy in the coming months. “

#If big sales in #January could give a little air to the clubs of #Ligue 1 or #Ligue 2, they would however lead to other problems in the longer term. “The only solution for clubs is to sell players, and therefore to weaken themselves sportingly, explains #Vincent #Chaudel. #But we risk entering a vicious circle, because to balance or reduce deficits we will sell, so be less competitive, and therefore win fewer points in the UEFA index and less money through #European competitions. #Going through the group stage of the #Champions #League is likely to be increasingly difficult for #French clubs. “
